Benoit NEMERY, MD, PhD. KU Leuven Department of Public Health and Primary Care Centre for Environment and Health Leuven, Belgium ben.nemery@kuleuven.be Ben Nemery is holder of degrees in medicine (KU Leuven 1977), occupational medicine (UC Louvain 1980) and toxicology (MSc Surrey 1982, PhD UK/CNAA 1986). He has been affiliated with the Medical Faculty of the KU Leuven since 1987. He became full professor in 1998 and Emeritus Professor in 2018, but he has continued his teaching, clinical and research activities. He founded the research unit of Lung Toxicology, a joint venture between the divisions of Pneumology and of Occupational, Environmental and Insurance Medicine at the KU Leuven. The research unit is now part of the Centre for Environment and Health within the Department of Public Health and Primary Care (https://www.kuleuven.be/onderzoek/portaal/#/team/50000688?hl=en&lang=en) and is physically located on the KU Leuven biomedical campus Gasthuisberg within the BREATHE laboratory (https://gbiomed.kuleuven.be/english/research/50000625/pne). His teaching included courses in toxicology and occupational medicine, mainly at postgraduate level. He has also been active in promoting research integrity. He held a weekly outpatient clinic for environmental and occupational (pulmonary) disorders in the Leuven University Hospital (https://www.uzleuven.be/en). His research has involved experimental as well as clinical-epidemiological studies in the mechanisms of lung disease caused by occupational and environmental pollutants. Recently he has concentrated on occupational and environmental health issues in the South, especially DR Congo. He has been promoter or co-promoter of 33 PhDs. He is co-author of over 400 publications in international biomedical journals (https://orcid.org/0000-0003-0571-4689) and he has contributions in more than 50 books. He has given over 250 lectures for international audiences at congresses and educational workshops. He is a member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium and various other national and international scientific bodies, including the Collegium Ramazzini, the American Thoracic Society, and the European Respiratory Society, where he held various leadership positions, including as chair of the Scientific Committee (2006-2009) and the Ethics and Integrity Committee (2020-2023).
