Jesse Roman

Dr. Jesse Roman is a physician-scientist who is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. For three and a half decades, Dr. Roman has played leadership roles in regional/national/international professional organizations and has served on important posts in academic institutions in the U.S. as Division Director, Department Chair, and Institute Director. Dr. Roman has served as a full-time member of research study sections of the federal government and private organizations. His basic, translational, and clinical research has generated over 270 publications and 34 book chapters. His basic research focuses on fibroblast biology, lung tissue remodeling, and interstitial lung disease. He has participated in close to 50 clinical trials and has served on Data Safety Monitoring Boards and Adjudication Committees of multi-center and multi-national clinical trials. He also served as the inaugural Treasurer of the American Thoracic Society (2022-25; now president-elect and set to serve as President in 2027) and Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal for the Medical Sciences (2017-pres). Dr. Roman has delivered close to 200 invited lectures in the US and abroad and has won several prestigious awards and recognitions. He is active clinically and he is most proud of the over 150 faculty he has helped recruit into academic medicine and the more than 70 students, residents, fellows, and junior faculty he mentored, consistent with his stated mission of using his laboratory and clinic as a classroom for those interested in developing careers in academic medicine.
